The characteristics and prevention methods of aphids

The *Hemiptera* species known as the "blind blind family" is found in regions such as Hainan and Yunnan. This pest is not only a threat to avocados but also affects various crops including cocoa, fruits, cashews, pepper, and red durian. The nymphs primarily feed on young avocado leaves, causing water-soaked, polygonal spots that eventually dry out. Both adults and nymphs damage young fruits, resulting in scarring and stunted growth, which also leads to drying and deformation of the affected areas. This insect measures 5–6 mm in length and 1.2–1.5 mm in width. It has a long, khaki-colored body with a small, dark brown head at the rear. Its antennae are slender and approximately twice the length of its body, with the first segment being longer than the rest. The front of the thoracodorsal plate is reduced near the neck. The small shield (scutellum) has a rounded posterior edge, with a slight backward curve at the front and a small bump on top. The forewings are light gray with an iridescent sheen, while the legs are yellow with scattered black spots. Eggs are cylindrical, milky white, and have long, short, white filamentous structures on the sides for respiration. The nymphs go through five instars, with the fifth instar reaching 5.3 mm in length and 1.4 mm in width. They appear slightly reddish, with black compound eyes and scattered black spots on their antennae. The third and fourth segments of the antennae have black-brown hairs, and wing buds extend to the third abdominal segment. The scutellum corners are fully developed, and the leg joints have gray spots, with black ganglia present. In Hainan, this pest completes up to 12 generations per year, with one generation taking between 26.1 and 52.2 days. It remains active during winter and lays eggs on young avocado tissue. Once hatched, the nymphs feed on tender leaves and fruits, causing damage and drying. Outside of the shoot and fruit development periods, it may also attack nearby host plants. To manage infestations, it's recommended to cut twigs and spray an 80% dichlorvos solution diluted 1000 times.
