Peanuts, once dried to become legumes, are highly susceptible to moisture absorption when stored in high humidity environments, which can lead to spoilage. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that peanuts are completely dried before storage, with moisture content kept below 8%. During autumn, when the weather is sunny, fresh peanuts typically require 7 to 10 days of drying time to achieve the desired moisture level.
Before storing, it's important to carefully control both temperature and humidity. Damaged, diseased, or insect-bitten peanuts should be removed, as well as any shells. The moisture content must stay under 8%, and the storage temperature should not exceed 20°C. If the moisture level goes above 10%, the peanuts may deteriorate quickly, causing a loss of seed viability. Selected seeds are then placed into plastic braiding bags, with each bag weighing approximately 15 kilograms. They should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated indoor space, keeping the bags at least 50 cm away from walls and stacking them no higher than two meters.
During the initial phase of storage, regular ventilation is necessary to help reduce humidity and prevent mold growth. It’s also crucial to monitor the storage area for pests and rodents, as they can cause significant damage. Additionally, mildew can develop if conditions are not properly managed. Throughout the storage period, it's recommended to regularly inspect the stacks and ensure that everything remains in good condition. These precautions help maintain the quality and longevity of the stored peanuts.
