Start by placing a 2 cm thick layer of dried husks at the bottom of the storage container or basket. Then, place 2-3 garlic bulbs on top as a layer. Continue stacking the garlic in this manner, leaving about 4-5 cm from the top of the container. Finally, cover the entire pile with a tightly packed layer of husks. This technique helps maintain low oxygen levels and high carbon dioxide concentration inside the storage area, which significantly slows down the garlic's respiration process and extends its storage life. Another method involves using a well-drained, elevated site with dry soil. A straw base is laid on the ground, followed by a large cylindrical structure made of straw mats or wicker, approximately 100 cm in diameter and 150 cm in height. Each structure can hold around 800-900 kilograms of garlic. The dried garlic is placed inside, and the top is covered with 2-3 layers of reed mats to form a conical shape. The whole structure is then wrapped with mats and secured tightly with ropes to prevent exposure to sunlight and moisture loss. During the early stages of storage, it’s important to check the garlic every 2-3 days to remove any spoiled bulbs and manage moisture levels. Once winter arrives, precautions should be taken to avoid freezing damage. In the middle and later stages, it’s best not to disturb the garlic too much to maintain a stable environment and allow natural gas regulation. As long as the storage area remains well-ventilated, cool, and at a low temperature, this method provides excellent results for long-term garlic preservation.
