China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) has made significant progress in its soil testing and precision fertilization initiatives. Recently, the company successfully completed a special rice fertilizer demonstration project in Baishatang Village, Guangcun Town, Quzhou City. The application of specialized fertilizers developed by Zhonghai Chemical Co., Ltd. resulted in a remarkable increase in rice yield—140 kg per mu compared to conventional management practices. This represents a 46.6% improvement, surpassing initial expectations.
Historically, farmers in Baishatang Village relied on their own experience for fertilization, often applying excessive amounts without considering soil conditions. Despite high fertilizer usage, the rice had low seed setting rates and a high percentage of empty grains, resulting in only about 300 kg of rice per mu. At the start of last year, Sinopec Chemical partnered with the Zhangzhou Agricultural Technology Promotion Station to conduct soil tests across the village. Based on findings showing potassium deficiency, a new formula was introduced—reducing nitrogen and phosphate while increasing potash input. After applying this tailored fertilizer to 100 mu of farmland, the average yield rose to 440.2 kg per mu, with a cost reduction of over 20 yuan per mu and an additional income of more than 170 yuan per mu, delivering substantial economic returns.
Over the past year, Sinopec has established over 2,300 mu of demonstration fields across 18 cities and counties on Hainan Island. These projects have helped change local farming practices, reducing the common misconception that more fertilizer always means better results. Farmers are now becoming more aware of nutrient content and are no longer solely focused on price when purchasing fertilizers.
Soil testing and formula fertilization can be seen as a “physical exam†for the land, with customized “prescriptions†designed for each crop to ensure balanced nutrition. This approach improves fertilizer efficiency, reduces waste, boosts yields, and increases farmers’ incomes. To date, Sinopec has developed eight specialized formula fertilizers, including those tailored for rice, sugarcane, and bananas, providing crops with essential nutrients. Key model crops include sugarcane, rice, bananas, and pineapples.
Since the implementation of the Sinopec Soil Testing and Formula Fertilization Project, there has been a clear improvement in fertilizer use efficiency, crop yields, and product quality. The project has delivered notable economic and social benefits, demonstrating the value of science-based agricultural practices.
