Recently, many onion farmers have been asking about the issue of "white growth" on green onions. In fact, this problem is usually caused by three main factors: one disease and two pests. Understanding these causes can help you take the right measures to protect your crops.
1. Gray Mold. This fungal disease appears as gray or white spots on the leaves, which gradually develop into white, necrotic lesions. These lesions are often oval or nearly shuttle-shaped, and when they merge, they cause the leaves to twist and eventually die. To manage this, it's recommended to use a new-generation fungicide called Enzymes, diluted at 1000 times, and spray it regularly to prevent the spread of the disease.
2. Thrips. These tiny insects, both adults and nymphs, feed on the sap of onions using their piercing-sucking mouthparts. This feeding causes long, yellowish-white streaks on the leaves. In severe cases, the leaves become distorted and turn brown. For chemical control, you can spray a solution of 20% acetamiprid diluted 3000 times or 10% imidacloprid diluted 1500 times. Both are effective in controlling thrips infestations.
3. Onion Leafminer. The larvae of this pest feed inside the leaves, creating pale, whitish tunnels that look like small pockets. As the larvae grow, the tunnels become larger and more irregular. They move back and forth within the leaf tissue, and multiple tunnels can join together, causing the leaves to yellow and wither. To treat this, a 2% avermectin solution diluted 1000 times is an effective option. It works well against the larvae and helps reduce damage.
By identifying the specific cause of the "white growth" on your green onions, you can choose the most appropriate treatment method. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are key to maintaining healthy crops and ensuring a good yield. If left unchecked, these issues can significantly impact your harvest, so it's important to act quickly once symptoms appear.
