How to prevent grapes from producing fruit

Grapes develop as a result of seed abortion. It has been observed that the number of mature small-grained seeds is similar to that of large-grained seeds. However, the immature seeds remain in an early developmental stage, are small in size, and lack human-like characteristics. When a fruit contains one mature seed, it tends to be slightly larger. With two mature seeds, the fruit can grow to a medium size, and with three mature seeds, it can develop into a normal, large-sized grape. To improve grape quality and yield, proper management during flowering is essential. First, ensure adequate fertilization and irrigation during the flowering period. This supports the "critical period for fruit set nutrition" and the "critical period for seed development and nutrition" after flowering, providing the necessary nutrients for healthy growth. Second, during the early to full flowering stages, apply a 0.2% borax solution every seven days, repeating this process 2–3 times. This helps promote pollen tube germination and increases the fertilization rate, leading to better fruit development. Third, implement summer pruning techniques. From the beginning of flowering until full bloom, top the fruiting branches and remove all lateral shoots, leaving only one main shoot at the top. After seven days, leave 1–2 leaves on the tip. If new shoots appear, they should be removed promptly to maintain balance and optimize energy distribution. Lastly, perform artificial axillary spike removal. Two to three days before flowering, remove about 1/5 to 1/4 of the spikes. This technique is especially effective for varieties like roses and new rose types, significantly increasing the spike rate and producing larger, more robust clusters. By following these practices, grape growers can enhance both the quantity and quality of their harvest, ensuring healthier and more productive vines.
