Daddy often consumes more than 500 milliliters of beer every day, which is equivalent to a full bottle. This habit not only increases his risk of developing fatty liver and what's commonly called "beer heart," but it also puts his children at a higher risk of alcohol addiction later in life. Tao Ran, the director of the Addiction Center at the General Hospital of the Beijing Military Region, recently warned men who enjoy drinking beer, especially during the summer months. He emphasized that the ideal daily intake should be less than 500 milliliters.
Many people believe that beer is like “liquid bread†— nutritious and low in alcohol content, so it’s harmless to drink in large quantities. However, Tao Ran clarified that this is a common misconception. A liter of beer actually contains as much alcohol as one or two glasses of white liquor. Therefore, even though it may seem mild, excessive consumption can still lead to serious health issues.
Tao Ran advised adults to limit their beer intake to between 100 to 200 milliliters per serving, with no more than 500 milliliters (one bottle) in a day. The optimal temperature for drinking beer is between 12°C and 15°C, where the flavor and foam are at their best. It’s important to avoid consuming cold beer in excess and to steer clear of salty or smoked foods while drinking.
According to Tao Ran, about 30% of alcoholics treated at the center initially started with beer. They later progressed to stronger alcoholic drinks, believing that beer wasn't strong enough. The most obvious signs of alcohol addiction include an inability to go a day without drinking, consuming alcohol first thing in the morning, and drinking before bed due to anxiety. Many also tend to drink on an empty stomach.
If someone frequently drinks beer uncontrollably, drinks quickly at gatherings, prefers to drink alone at home, hoards alcohol, or experiences memory loss after drinking, they may already be suffering from alcohol dependence — even if they don’t feel physically unwell. Tao Ran recommends that such individuals seek professional help and treatment.
Moreover, alcohol addiction can have long-term effects on future generations. If a father drinks heavily, even just beer, the child born to a mother who was pregnant during that time may suffer from “Baby Drink Syndrome.†These children may cry more easily, have lower intelligence, and are more likely to develop alcohol addiction later in life. In the U.S., children whose fathers often get drunk on weekends are referred to as “Sunday babies.â€
