According to the Science and Technology Daily, a breakthrough in breast cancer research has been made by Chinese scientists. The study, led by researchers from the Kunming General Hospital of the People's Liberation Army, the Kunming Institute of Zoology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical College, has identified key genes involved in the development of breast cancer. This new discovery could lead to earlier detection and better treatment options for patients.
Currently, breast cancer is diagnosed through pathological examination, which involves removing a small tissue sample after a mass is detected. However, this method often identifies the disease at an advanced stage. To address this challenge, scientists have focused on developing more effective early diagnostic techniques. The research project titled "Molecular Pathology of the Role of Oncogenes and Tumor Suppressor Genes in Breast Cancer Development" was launched to explore these possibilities.
The team investigated the genetic changes that contribute to breast cancer formation. In collaboration with the University of Nebraska Medical School, they selected two oncogenes and ten tumor suppressor genes believed to be most relevant to the disease. After eight years of research, they confirmed that two oncogenes and seven tumor suppressor genes play critical roles in breast cancer progression. This finding provides a solid foundation for early diagnosis and understanding the molecular basis of precancerous conditions.
This research introduced a novel approach for predicting and diagnosing breast cancer by analyzing gene abnormalities in benign breast lesions. The results are already being used in postgraduate pathology education and the prognosis of proliferative breast diseases across 14 institutions in China. Moreover, the findings offer valuable insights for the development of new breast cancer treatments.
The head of the research team, Dr. Yang, emphasized that breast cancer is growing at an annual rate of 0.3% to 8%, making it the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. He highlighted that the project's completion and ongoing research hold significant theoretical and practical importance for improving breast cancer diagnosis, prevention, and tumor pathology advancements.
