During the hot summer months, egg production in chickens can be significantly affected. The ideal temperature range for optimal egg-laying is between 15°C and 25°C. However, when temperatures rise above 28°C, egg production tends to drop dramatically. The eggs become smaller, with thinner shells, a condition commonly referred to as "summer rest." To maintain or even improve egg production during the midsummer period, several effective strategies can be implemented.
One approach is to add watermelon rind to the chicken feed. Chopping fresh watermelon rind and mixing it into the feed at a rate of 20% to 30% helps prevent heatstroke and keeps the chickens cool. This method has been shown to boost egg production by up to 9%.
Another option is to offer green bean or mung bean soup. Mung beans are rich in cooling properties and help detoxify the body. After washing the beans, they should be cooked in ten to fifteen times their volume of water until they split. Feeding this soup to chickens several times a day can increase egg production by approximately 10.5%.
Providing cold, clean water is also beneficial. Chickens should be given about 0.15 kg of cold water per 1.5 kg of body weight daily. The water should contain no more than 0.2% salt. This practice can lead to a 12% improvement in egg production.
Adding baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to the feed can help regulate blood pH levels and maintain carbon dioxide balance in laying hens. A daily dose of 0.3 grams of baking soda per chicken, fed once at noon, can increase egg production by over 11%.
Including citric acid in the feed can help maintain a balanced metabolism. Adding 0.05% to 0.15% citric acid to the daily diet can not only enhance egg production but also increase egg weight.
Yeast is another valuable addition. It improves disease resistance and enhances feed conversion efficiency. By adding 2% to 3% yeast to the daily feed, egg production can rise by 10% to 20%, while also reducing feed costs.
Finally, aspirin can be used to help chickens dissipate body heat more effectively. A daily dose of 0.05% aspirin in the feed has been found to improve egg production and strengthen shell thickness.
By implementing these methods, poultry farmers can better manage the challenges of summer heat and maintain higher egg production levels throughout the season.
