How to Choose the Right Chicken Manure Fermentation Agent for Fast Organic Fertilizer Production
The traditional method of fermenting chicken manure involves natural accumulation and fermentation over 5-6 months. This process often results in strong odors, environmental pollution, and significant nutrient loss. However, using a fermentation agent can significantly speed up the process, making it more efficient and manageable. Different types of fermentation agents vary widely in terms of fermentation time, dosage, cost, operation difficulty, labor intensity, and the final quality of the compost. Some may produce a better smell, while others may result in a different texture or color.
For instance, a straw fermentation agent can also be used to break down chicken manure in about 20 days, resulting in an odorless, harmless product. The compost becomes soft, yellow-brown, with visible white mycelium on the surface, and contains approximately 45% organic matter. To prepare this, spread dry chicken manure on the ground, moisten it to about 40% moisture, and mix in 2 kg of straw fermentation agent per ton of manure. It's best to dilute the agent with rice bran or wheat bran, add 15 kg of superphosphate as a deodorizer, and include 100–150 kg of peat. Turn the pile twice and form a rectangular heap about 1 meter high and 2 meters wide. Make ventilation holes at the top and cover the pile with a plastic sheet, securing it tightly to the ground with weights every meter. In summer and autumn, remove the cover once daily for 1–2 hours. On sunny days, uncover the sheet in the morning and re-cover it in the evening. After 4–6 days, the temperature inside the pile should reach 60–70°C.
If using fresh chicken manure, start by layering straw powder, rice bran, grass powder, peanut shell powder, and peat moss on the ground. Then spread the wet chicken manure on top, sprinkle 0.1% urea, and add about 20 kg of superphosphate per ton. Mix 2 kg of straw starter with rice bran or wheat bran before spreading evenly. During the process, turn the pile twice and build a stack 1.5–2 meters wide, 1 meter high, and of any length. Make ventilation holes with a stick, cover with plastic, and ensure proper heat retention and moisture. Ventilation is crucial during the process. After 10 days, another turning is required. The entire process takes about 20 days, resulting in a mature fertilizer that’s rich in nutrients and free from harmful pests.
Using a Golden Baby Fermentation Agent is another effective option. For 1 ton of organic material (equivalent to about 2.5 tons of fresh chicken manure), use 1 kg of Golden Baby starter and 5 kg of rice bran per kg of the starter (or substitute with bran or cornmeal). Dilute the mixture and evenly distribute it into the pile. Note that fresh rice bran works better than old ones. Ensure good aeration and regular turning during fermentation. Keep the temperature around 70°C—too high can damage nutrients. Maintain moisture between 60–65%. If too wet, add materials like straw, sawdust, or dry soil. If too dry, add water. Test the moisture by squeezing a handful of material: it should leave a watermark but not drip. The entire process usually completes within 5–7 days.
