How to Choose the Right Chicken Manure Fermentation Agent for Quick Organic Fertilizer Production
Traditionally, chicken manure was left to ferment naturally for 5–6 months, which not only caused unpleasant odors and environmental pollution but also led to significant nutrient loss. However, using a fermentation agent can greatly speed up the process and make it more efficient. The choice of the right starter is crucial, as different products vary in terms of fermentation time, dosage, cost, ease of use, labor intensity, and the final quality of the compost, including its smell and appearance.
One effective option is a straw fermentation agent that can also be used to process chicken manure. With this method, the fermentation takes about 20 days, resulting in odorless, safe, and high-quality compost. The finished product is soft, yellow-brown in color, and contains grayish-white mycelium. The organic matter content is typically around 45%.
To start, spread dry chicken manure on the ground and add water equivalent to 40% of the manure weight. For every ton of chicken manure, mix 2 kg of straw fermentation agent with rice bran or wheat bran, along with 15 kg of superphosphate as a deodorizer. Add 100–150 kg of peat to the mixture. Then, pile the material into a rectangular heap approximately 1 meter high and 2 meters wide, making ventilation holes at the top. Cover the pile with a plastic sheet, securing it tightly to the ground with heavy objects every meter to prevent it from blowing away in the wind. In summer and autumn, it's important to remove the cover once daily for 1–2 hours to allow air circulation. On sunny days, you can uncover the pile in the morning and re-cover it by night. After 4–6 days, the internal temperature will rise to 60–70°C.
If using fresh chicken manure, start by layering straw powder, rice bran, grass powder, peanut shell powder, and peat moss on the ground before adding the wet chicken manure. Sprinkle 0.1% urea and about 20 kg of superphosphate per ton of manure, then mix in 2 kg of straw fermentation agent with rice bran or wheat bran. Turn the compost twice during the process, forming a pile 1.5–2 meters wide, 1 meter high, and of any length. Make ventilation holes with a stick, cover with a plastic sheet to retain heat and moisture, and ensure proper aeration. After 10 days, the compost should be turned again. Within 20 days, the fermentation is complete, and the fertilizer becomes rich in nutrients while eliminating harmful pests.
Another excellent option is the Golden Baby Fermentation Agent. For 1 ton of organic material (equivalent to about 2.5 tons of fresh chicken manure), mix in 1 kg of Golden Baby starter and 5 kg of rice bran (or bran, cornmeal) per kilogram of the starter. Dilute the mixture and evenly distribute it throughout the pile. It’s recommended to use fresh rice bran for better results. During the fermentation process, ensure proper aeration and regular turning. Maintain a temperature of around 70°C—too high may damage nutrients. The moisture level should be between 60–65%. If the material is too wet, add straw, sawdust, mushroom residue, or dry soil. If too dry, add water. A simple test is to grab a handful of the material: if it leaves a faint watermark without dripping, it’s just right. The entire process usually takes 5–7 days.
