This past weekend, we were greeted by an eerie silence. The hum of fans, the buzz of electronics, and the comforting glow of streetlights all disappeared as a neighborhood-wide power outage hit us early Saturday morning. At first, it felt strange—no electricity meant no lights, no Wi-Fi, and no way to charge our phones. But surprisingly, it wasn’t all bad. There was something magical about sitting together in the dim morning light, sipping coffee by candlelight. It reminded us how much we take modern conveniences for granted.
Thankfully, the outage only lasted a day or two, and by Monday, power was back on. To celebrate the return of electricity—and the official start of October—I thought it would be fun to create something seasonal and festive. So, Aliyah and I grabbed a few supplies from our stash: scraps of colorful felt, a plastic cup, markers, and scissors. With autumn officially underway, we decided to craft a simple yet charming felt bunting to add some warmth to our living room.
(These photos were taken on my phone during the crafting session.)
We started by tracing circles onto the felt using the bottom of the plastic cup, then carefully cut each one out. Once we had enough circles, we picked out a color scheme that felt “sweet and spicy,†like cinnamon and caramel, and strung them onto a thick piece of yarn. Knotting the ends kept everything secure, and before long, we had a cheerful garland ready to hang.
The bunting turned out better than expected, adding just the right touch of autumn charm to our space. We hung it as a double strand across the mantel, along with a "Celebrate" sign we made for Aliyah's recent birthday party. It looks fantastic, and there’s even a little leftover section we’ll trim later.
After finishing the garland, we decided to pull out a wooden crate we keep in the garage for parties. Filling it with mason jars holding tea lights, along with some leftover seasonal trinkets from our tote, created a cozy centerpiece that ties everything together nicely.
It’s amazing how such simple projects can transform your home without breaking the bank. Plus, it gave us a chance to slow down and enjoy the process—a nice change of pace after being offline for a couple of days!
Happy first day of October! This season always feels like a fresh start, whether it’s pumpkin bread baking in the oven, cozy sweaters, or just the crisp air outside. Speaking of pumpkin bread, I think it’s time I head to the kitchen to whip up a batch. Stay tuned for the recipe—I promise it’s worth every bite.
Until next time, happy fall y’all!
