The base of the stem becomes woody, and the plant typically grows between 20 to 90 cm tall. The stems are square-shaped (tetragonal) with purple segments. The flowers grow in terminal racemes, with bell-shaped sepals and lip-shaped corollas that have a long tube extending beyond the flower.

The flowers are small, tubular, and come in vibrant red and yellow hues. When in bloom, they resemble a string of red gunpowder, hence one of its common names.

This plant thrives in warm, sunny conditions but can tolerate partial shade. It prefers well-drained, loose, and fertile soil. Avoid direct, intense sunlight, as it may cause stress to the plant.

The ideal temperature range for growth is 20–25°C. As a short-day plant, it blooms faster under less than 8 hours of daily light—reaching bloom in about 57 days. In contrast, with 14 hours of light per day, it takes around 82 days to flower.
