Place of Origin:
This plant is native to Japan and also found in the Qinling region of China. It is commonly cultivated in major cities across China, making it a popular ornamental shrub in urban landscapes.
Morphological Characteristics:
The purple leafhopper is a deciduous, multi-branched shrub that typically grows between 2 to 3 meters tall. Its leaves are dark purple or red, while young branches display a striking purple color. Older branches turn grayish-brown or purple-brown with distinct grooves and small thorns. The leaves are entire, rhombic, or obovate, often clustered on short shoots. Flowers appear singly or in clusters of 2–5, hanging down like racemes, with yellow petals that have red streaks. The berries are bright red and remain on the plant throughout the season. Flowering occurs in April, and fruits mature from September to October.
There are approximately 500 species within the genus, with around 200 found in China. Some commonly cultivated varieties include 'Dwarf Violet' (Cv. Atropurpurea), which only reaches about 60 cm in height and is ideal for container planting. Another variety, B. poirettii, features grooved twigs, purple-brown branches, and yellow flowers with 8–15 pendulous racemes. The fruit is oval-shaped and bright red.
Growing Habits:
The purple leafhopper is known for its strong adaptability, cold resistance, and drought tolerance. It thrives in sunny, cool, and moist environments but can also tolerate partial shade. It prefers well-drained sandy loam soil, and watering should be moderate to avoid root rot. Seedlings are particularly sensitive to overly wet conditions. Transplanting is best done in early spring (February) or autumn (October–November), either with bare roots or a ball of soil. During the growing season, water once a month or as needed alongside other plants.
This shrub is very hardy and responds well to pruning. Vigorous trimming encourages new growth and helps maintain a compact shape. In late winter or early spring, thin out branches or cut back long shoots to control height and shape the plant after flowering. Fertilization should be done every other year, after the leaves have fallen in autumn. Apply compost or manure around the base, mix it into the soil, and water thoroughly with frozen water to help the plant survive the winter.
