Mushrooms are not only nutritious but also highly flavorful, making them a favorite among consumers. However, during the cultivation of straw mushrooms, improper water temperature management can significantly impact the yield and quality of the harvest.
To successfully grow straw mushrooms, it's essential to understand their growth requirements. As a high-temperature mushroom species, straw mushrooms thrive in specific environmental conditions. The optimal spore germination temperature is around 40°C, while mycelium growth is most active at about 35°C. If the temperature drops below 12°C or rises above 42°C, mycelial growth is severely hindered. Additionally, straw mushrooms require high humidity for proper development. The moisture content of the growing medium should be around 70%, and the air humidity should remain between 90% and 95%. When the air humidity falls below 80%, the fruit bodies grow slowly, and their surface becomes rough and dull. On the other hand, if the humidity exceeds 96%, the mushrooms are more likely to suffer from necrosis and disease.
As shown, straw mushrooms have strict water temperature requirements. When watering, the water temperature should ideally match the ambient temperature. Unfortunately, many farmers overlook this important detail. During hot seasons, some farmers directly spray well water at around 20°C, which can cause young mushrooms to grow poorly or even die. To avoid this, it’s best to water in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. The ideal water temperature for spraying is approximately 30°C.
Moreover, the watering technique should vary depending on the growth stage of the mushrooms. When the fruiting bodies are still small, light misting is sufficient. During the needle stage and small button phase, it's important to stop spraying directly on the substrate. If the medium is dry, farmers should spray water in the aisles of the growing room or sprinkle water on the floor to increase air humidity without over-wetting the mushrooms. By following these practices, growers can ensure better yields and healthier crops.
