Frequent problems in dairy insemination

Insemination can sometimes fail due to improper insertion into the vagina. This usually happens when the insemination gun is inserted in the wrong direction, encountering resistance from the vaginal walls, or due to cow allergies, accidental entry into the urethra, or careless handling. If the direction is incorrect, try inserting the gun diagonally downward about 10 cm into the vagina and then adjust it to a flat or downward position. This is especially useful for older cows, whose vaginas tend to relax and sag toward the lower part of the abdominal cavity. If the vaginal wall curvature is causing blockage, use your left hand to gently push inside the rectum and straighten the vagina. In case the cow shows allergic reactions, you can rhythmically move your left hand or lightly tap the intestinal wall to distract the cow and reduce its focus on the genital area. If the insemination gun accidentally enters the urethra, pull it back slightly and guide the tip along the vaginal wall to reposition it correctly. Difficulty locating the cervix is more common in young cows, older cows, or those with a closed reproductive tract. The cervix in young cows is often small, like a finger, and can be found close to the vaginal opening. In older cows, the cervix tends to be larger and may descend into the abdominal cavity along with the uterus. It's important to note that if a cow has a closed reproductive tract and there’s no visible cervical tissue in front of the pelvis, it should be gently pressed toward the vulva and massaged by hand to stretch it open. When using a cervical inseminator, it's crucial to hold the gun properly with the left hand. Sometimes, the cervix may be blocked by folds or misaligned due to the natural curvature of the vaginal canal. To prevent the cervix from sagging, the operator can slightly withdraw their hand and stabilize the cervix. If there are wrinkles or folds blocking the way, gently push the cervical canal to smooth out the folds and ensure proper alignment for successful insemination. Proper technique, patience, and understanding of the cow's anatomy are essential for a successful artificial insemination process. Always approach each cow calmly and carefully, as stress can affect both the cow and the procedure's success rate.
