Insemination can sometimes fail to be properly inserted into the vagina, and this issue is commonly caused by incorrect insertion direction, resistance from the vaginal walls, cow allergies, accidental entry into the urethra, or the cow's natural resistance due to improper handling. If the insemination gun is inserted in the wrong direction, try inserting it diagonally downward about 10 cm into the vagina first, then gradually push it forward in a straight or downward motion. This technique works especially well with older cows, as their vaginas tend to relax and sag toward the lower part of the abdominal cavity.
If the vaginal wall's natural curve is causing blockage, use your left hand to gently guide and straighten the vaginal canal from inside the rectum. In cases where the cow shows signs of allergy or discomfort, you can rhythmically move your left hand or lightly tap the intestinal wall to distract the animal and reduce tension around the genital area. If the insemination gun accidentally enters the urethra, simply pull it back slightly and then carefully guide the tip along the vaginal wall until it reaches the correct position.
Difficulty locating the cervix is more common in young cows, older cows, or those with a closed reproductive tract. Young cows typically have a small cervix, often the size of a finger, which can be found close to the vaginal opening. Older cows, on the other hand, may have a larger cervix that has descended deeper into the abdominal cavity along with the uterus. It's important to note that if a cow has a closed reproductive tract and no visible cervical tissue is present near the pelvis, the cervix must be pushed as close to the vulva as possible. Gently massaging the area with your hand can help stretch and open the cervix for better access.
When using a cervical inseminator, it’s essential to hold the device firmly with your left hand, as folds or wrinkles in the vaginal canal can cause misalignment or blockage. If the cervix is not properly positioned, gently pull your hand back slightly while holding the cervix to prevent it from sagging. If there are folds in the cervical canal, apply gentle pressure to straighten them out, ensuring smooth and accurate insertion of the insemination gun.
