Premature Decay and Fertilization Prevention Measures for Vegetable Plants in Summer

Symptoms: The plants show weak growth, with thin stems, small and yellowing leaves, poor fruit set, slow fruit development, low yield, and reduced resistance to diseases. These symptoms often indicate a lack of essential nutrients and improper fertilization practices.

Analysis: For summer vegetables, improper fertilization is the primary cause of early plant decline. If sufficient organic fertilizer is not applied before planting, the soil may become nutrient-deficient, leading to premature aging in later growth stages. Additionally, over-reliance on chemical fertilizers without proper organic input can cause soil compaction, reducing its aeration and water infiltration. This hinders root development, resulting in weak, stunted plants that are more prone to early senescence. Excessive use of nitrogen-based fertilizers can damage roots, making plants weak and underdeveloped. In some cases, even without root injury, excessive nitrogen can lead to leggy growth, which also contributes to early crop failure. Moreover, high salt concentration in the soil from over-fertilization can harm roots, limiting their ability to absorb water and nutrients, further accelerating plant aging.

Prevention: To prevent root damage and promote healthy growth, it's essential to adopt scientific fertilization methods. This involves using adequate organic fertilizer as a base and applying chemical fertilizers according to the specific needs of the crop. Overuse of nitrogen alone should be avoided. For example, during the fruiting stage of tomatoes, a balanced ratio of nitrogen to potassium (1:2) is ideal, with about 30 kg of compound fertilizer per acre being recommended. Proper fertilization not only supports strong plant growth but also enhances disease resistance and overall yield.

Remedies: If crops have already started showing signs of premature aging, immediate action is needed. A combination of foliar spraying and irrigation can help restore plant health. For foliar application, a mixture of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) foliar fertilizer and cytokinin at a dilution of 400 times can be sprayed directly onto the leaves to provide quick nutrient absorption. During irrigation, root-stimulating agents or microbial fertilizers can be used to encourage root growth and improve the plant’s ability to take up water and nutrients. Once the plants show signs of recovery, continue with regular top-dressing based on the crop’s growth requirements to ensure long-term health and productivity.
