Golden color melon cultivation techniques

Golden color melon, also known as "melon lantern" or "Fu life melon," is a unique and vibrant fruit with a golden hue. Its shape resembles a melon, featuring a round base, a central mark, and 3 to 5 small raised bags at the bottom. The skin comes in various colors such as red, white, brown, yellow, green, and blue. The golden flower emits a distinct scent of bluegrass and is larger in size. This fruit can be cooked in multiple ways—fried, boiled, steamed, or braised—and is particularly beneficial for patients with diabetes and nephritis due to its health properties. To start growing golden color melons, seedlings are typically sown between mid-March and mid-June. If greenhouses are available, planting can be adjusted accordingly. Before sowing, seeds should be soaked in warm water at 55°C while stirring continuously until the temperature drops to around 30°C. Soak them for 6 hours, then wrap them in gauze and place them in a warm environment (28–30°C) to germinate. Once the sprout reaches about 1 mm in length, it's ready for planting. For the seedbed, mix 6 parts of fertile Datian soil with 4 parts of well-decomposed organic fertilizer, sift and blend them evenly into 5 cm x 8 cm nutrient pots. Place one seed per pot, cover it with about 1 cm of soil, and then cover the pots with plastic film to maintain moisture and warmth. During the day, keep the temperature around 28°C, and at night, maintain it at about 21°C. Seedlings usually emerge within three days. For the next ten days after sowing, protect the area from rodents. After emergence, adjust the temperature to 25°C during the day and 18°C at night. Water regularly and use appropriate measures to prevent damping-off disease. Once the seedlings reach a height of 15 cm, they can be transplanted into the field. The planting depth should be approximately 5 mm above the ground. Apply 2000 kg of organic fertilizer and 20 kg of compound fertilizer per acre. Golden color melons thrive in high temperatures, so using plastic mulch is recommended. Plant 800 to 1000 plants per acre, with spacing of either 50 cm x 160 cm or 50 cm x 130 cm. It’s essential to use trellises for proper growth and support. Field management is crucial for optimal growth. In the early stages, watering should be controlled, while mid-growth requires timely irrigation. After the fruit sets, provide a large amount of water and apply a urea solution at 10 kg per mu. Later, reduce watering to enhance fruit quality. Remove all side vines below the 6th node, leaving only 1–2 on the remaining branches. Depending on soil fertility and growth stage, select 2–4 fruits per plant, and leave the last one with two leaves for topping. Be careful not to let the tender vines touch the main stem, as this may cause unsightly scars on the fruit surface.
