Ponds used for breeding adult fish should not be too large, ideally between 1 to 5 acres. The soil should be sandy loam with minimal silt, and the bottom should be flat with a slight slope toward the outlet. The water depth should be around 1.5 to 4 meters, ensuring a well-developed irrigation and drainage system. Water quality must be good—fresh, clean, and free from pollution. Before stocking, the pond should be dried for about 10 to 15 days, then filled with 10 cm of water. Apply 80 to 100 kg of lime per mu, and every other day, add 5 kg of bleaching powder to disinfect the entire pond thoroughly.
For seedlings, it's important to desalt them before placing them in the pond. Adult fish are typically raised when they reach about 10 cm in length. Stocking should be uniform to prevent competition for food, with a density of 1000 to 1500 fish per acre. To maximize production, include 40 bighead carp, 20 common carp, and 200 Pengze carp. This mix helps maintain water quality and improves overall yield.
Feeding is crucial for growth. Flower bud fish are predatory and can be fed with small fish, frozen fish, or meat. After acclimation, they can be transitioned to pellet feed. Before feeding, sprinkle a few drops of water to create a conditioned response. Once they associate the sound with food, they will gather to eat. Set up feeding stations using a bamboo or wooden board placed 6 to 7 meters from the shore. This ensures even feeding and reduces competition. Feed 3 to 5 times daily, adjusting the amount based on fish size and appetite. During early stages, feed 8% to 15% of their body weight, and later reduce to 3% to 5%. Feed in the morning and evening, as flower buds prefer to eat during these times. Use the "slow, fast, slow" technique when casting bait to ensure all fish get enough food without overfeeding.
Water quality management is essential. Flower bud fish thrive in clean water with dissolved oxygen levels between 4 to 6 mg/L and water clarity of 30 to 40 cm. Monitor water color and clarity regularly, and replace water as needed. In the early stages, water changes can be less frequent, but as fish grow, regular water exchanges and aeration become necessary. From September to October, when temperatures are ideal, proper water management is critical to support rapid growth.
Fishing is straightforward, with over 90% of adult fish caught after one or two net hauls. However, two precautions are important: first, stop feeding one day before fishing to avoid injuries from full stomachs. Second, use a fine-mesh net to minimize stress and injury during capture. Fish should be removed in segments to reduce damage. After netting, disinfect the pond to prevent fungal infections. This careful approach ensures healthier fish and better marketability.
