Piglets use little or no antibiotics

Wuhan Polytechnic University is the first university in the country to set up animal nutrition and feed processing specialty. Its animal science specialty belongs to the national specialty specialty. Professor Hou Yongqing of the university has been engaged in research on the direction of animal nutrition and feed science for 23 years and has an important influence in the field of piglet nutrition and green feed additives.

In 2010, the project "Key Technology for Adjusting Intestinal Health of Piglets and Its Application in Feed Industrialization" led by Professor Hou Yongqing was awarded the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award. Through theoretical and method innovation, the project has developed key technologies for the regulation of piglet intestinal health, providing technical support for the healthy and sustainable development of China's pig industry.

On June 15, 2012, we interviewed Professor Hou Yongqing.

Professor Hou Yongqing said that China is the world’s largest pig-rearing country and the pig industry has become an important industry related to the national economy and the people’s livelihood. Piglet rearing is the key to the pig raising industry. However, due to the relative lag in the development of piglet feed, etc., the annual economic losses due to piglet growth and health are as high as RMB 30 billion. The feed market for piglets has also been monopolized by foreign companies for a long time, which has seriously hindered our country. The development of the pig industry.

Professor Hou Yongqing conducted an in-depth study of the theoretical problems related to nutrition and intestinal health of piglets and found that factors such as malnutrition, physiological disorders, and pathogenic microorganisms can all cause disturbances in the intestinal structure and function of piglets, leading to indigestion and diarrhea. Growth retardation and even death, especially poor intestinal health caused by weaning stress, have become an urgent problem in pig breeding.

Prof. Hou Yongqing and relevant research institutes and companies jointly identified the key mechanisms affecting the intestinal health and nutritional regulation of piglets, established key technologies for nutrient regulation, and developed a series of high quality piglet feedstuffs for suckling pigs, which broke the market. Sexually solves the problem of post-weaning diarrhea, low feed intake, and growth retardation in piglets. Compared with traditional feeds, piglets using this chute feed increased their daily gain by 20%, feed utilization rate by 15%, diarrhea rate by 35%, survival rate by 5%, and greatly improved pig production efficiency.

Since 2004, this result has been applied directly by nearly 100 enterprises in 30 provinces and cities in China. In recent years, 3 million tons of pig feed has been promoted, profits have increased by more than 2 billion yuan, and taxes have increased by 800 million yuan. It promoted the development of large-scale backbone enterprises including five listed companies.

Professor Hou Yongqing also actively explored the development of new green feed additives.

The so-called green feed additive is a general term for feed additives that can promote the growth and health of livestock and poultry, improve the quality and quality of products, have no residue in livestock and poultry products, and have no pollution to the environment. It mainly includes probiotics, enzyme preparations, acidulants, oligosaccharides and plant extracts.

He said that the non-standard use of feed or its additives, and the long-term use of antibiotics in feed, will allow poisonous and harmful substances to remain in pigs and their products, while the use of high-copper, high-zinc, and organic arsenic additives will be extensive and widespread. It also caused pollution in the surrounding environment, affecting the normal growth of crops and even endangering human health.

Prof. Hou Yongqing has been researching piglet feed green additives since 1999, researching and developing “plant extract feed additives” and “synbiotic feed additives”, which can effectively replace the use of antibiotics, inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella, and promote intestinal probiotics. Bacteria grow, maintain the microecological balance of the intestine, and reduce the incidence of disease. The company also formulated production standards, formed a number of branded products, and sold well in 11 provinces and cities across the country. The market effect was good. Wuhan Fanhua Biotechnology Co., Ltd. has used this technology to produce feed since 2002, and its annual output value has reached 30 million yuan.

The achievement of the “Plant Function Nutritional Nutritional Regulation and Feed Industry Key Technology” achievement won the first prize of Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award in 2011. Has been promoted in Hubei, Hunan, Yunnan and other provinces and cities, and through the application of technology units to radiate 11 provinces and cities nationwide, significant economic and social benefits, and promote the piglet feed industry and pig industry development.

In addition to feed for piglets, Professor Hou Yongqing also conducted research on aquafeeds.

China is the world’s largest aquaculture country. In the past, most farmers used single feed ingredients or simple mixed feeds. Although the cost was low, nutrition was not comprehensive, and feed was wasted. It not only failed to achieve good economic benefits, but also easily contaminated water sources.

Prof. Hou Yongqing has been continuously researching aquatic feed since 1987 and has published 3 monographs to provide technical services for more than 20 companies, which has made great contributions to the development of aquatic feed in Hubei. Under his impetus, Wuhan Institute of Technology cooperated with Hunan Tangrenjin Group to establish the Aquatic Animal Nutrition Research Center. In 2005, with the help of Professor Hou Yongqing, China Tangshen Group developed the "Xiangda" brand fish feed. The feed to the Tang Renshen Group achieved a production value of 1 billion yuan.
