According to an official from the US Grains Council in Southeast Asia, the import of corn in Vietnam this year may be around 1 million tons, which is lower than the abnormally high level in the previous year but higher than 100,000 tons ten years ago. Vietnam produces about 4.5 million tons of corn each year, but it cannot meet the rapid growth of domestic demand.
Vietnam's mixed feed production has increased by nearly 16% annually, and in 2010 it could reach 14.5 million tons of corn, wheat, rice bran, cassava meal and soybean meal as the main raw materials for the production of mixed feed. This provided a good opportunity for exporting countries such as the United States, Argentina and India.
Officials of the Council of Grains in South East Asia projected that in 2011 Vietnam’s corn imports could increase significantly by nearly 50% to a record 1.5 million tons as Vietnam’s poultry and feed processing industry is growing rapidly.
Last year, Vietnam’s corn imports reached a record high of 1.48 million tons, up from 600,000 tons in 2008. However, the situation in 2009 was very special. At that time, high domestic prices prompted consumers to purchase corn from abroad to meet their own needs, and the export of cassava meal to China surged, resulting in a decline in domestic feed supply.
In recent years even Thailand has been importing corn from neighboring countries Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. Thailand imported about 350,000 tons of corn last year.
The potential for import of corn from Indonesia is huge because Indonesia's feed production has increased significantly and is currently about 9.2 million tons. In the next few years, Indonesia's feed production may reach 45-50 million tons, equivalent to the current total output in Southeast Asia. He said that the current per capita consumption of poultry in Indonesia is 4.0 kg, while the per capita consumption in Jakarta is as high as 27 kg.
