Researchers find rice genes that inhibit cadmium accumulation

Researchers from the University of Okayama, Japan, recently reported in the National Academy of Sciences that they found a rice gene that inhibits the accumulation of heavy metal cadmium in rice. This gene can block cadmium absorbed from the soil in rice root cells. Inside. This discovery opens the way for the cultivation of rice varieties that are difficult to accumulate cadmium.

Cadmium is widely used in electroplating and battery production, but if cadmium accumulates in large amounts in the human body, it will cause a large loss of calcium in bones, causing osteoporosis, bone atrophy, and joint pain. At present, it is very difficult for cadmium accumulated in human body to be discharged safely, so it is very important to prevent “cadmium from entering the mouth”.

Researchers at the Institute of Resources and Biological Sciences of Okayama University analyzed about 140 rice varieties from around the world and classified them into two categories according to their degree of difficulty in accumulating cadmium. By comparing these rice genes, the researchers found that the OsHMA3 gene directs the synthesis of proteins that play a key role in preventing the accumulation of cadmium in rice.

In rice cells that are difficult to accumulate cadmium, the protein synthesized by the OsHMA3 gene plays a role mainly in the "bubbles" responsible for storing metabolic waste in the root cells. In this way, the cadmium absorbed in the rice roots is transferred to the vacuole and sequestered. In the cadmium-accumulating species, the OsHMA3 gene and its synthesized protein do not have the above-mentioned functions, resulting in the accumulation of cadmium in the roots eventually accumulating in rice.

The team believes that if the performance of the OsHMA3 gene is increased, it is possible to grow rice in a paddy field with high cadmium content. If this gene is applied to the improvement of rice varieties, it is also expected to develop a new rice variety that is difficult to accumulate cadmium.
