On the 25th, the Olympic Ward at Union Hospital officially commenced trial operations. This specially designed ward is equipped with advanced technology to ensure patient safety and comfort. A key feature is the infrared sensor installed in the bathroom. If a patient has an accident in the restroom, they can simply wave their palm near the sensor—no need to touch a pager or press a button. The system immediately alerts the nursing staff, who will respond swiftly.
During the Olympics, this ward will serve as the primary medical facility for high-ranking officials, including the Chinese head of state and top members of the International Olympic Committee. It’s a testament to the hospital’s commitment to providing world-class care under the most demanding conditions.
The Olympic Ward was converted from a regular ward and now features 22 beds, including 17 single rooms and 5 suites. All areas are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, such as nurse and doctor workstations, advanced medical monitoring systems, a reliable ward call system, fire protection measures, and comprehensive security protocols. Every detail has been carefully designed to meet the highest international standards.
In case of an emergency in the bathroom, even if a patient cannot use their fingers to operate a device, waving their hand about 5 cm above the infrared sensor will trigger an immediate alert. The nurse station display will flash red, allowing medical staff to respond quickly and provide necessary assistance.
Additionally, the hospital has assigned a dietitian to cater to the needs of foreign patients. Through daily interactions, the dietitian gathers information about each patient’s food preferences and creates personalized meal plans based on their health condition. Each day’s meals are divided into three portions, with detailed nutritional information such as calories and protein content clearly labeled according to global standards. While traditional Chinese cuisine is available for self-service, the meals are tailored to meet both cultural and dietary requirements.
This new ward not only enhances the patient experience but also reflects the hospital's dedication to innovation, safety, and quality care during one of the world's most prestigious events.
