Several technical elements of breeding

Chengyu's feeding habits and requirements are similar to those of young pigs. To ensure a steady supply of fresh food, it is recommended to cultivate natural feed such as mud loaches and snails within the pond. Starting in spring, raise the water level by 30–40 cm, add fertilizer to improve water quality, and then introduce 5–10 kg of loaches and 50–100 kg of snails per 0.07 hectares. After spawning and breeding, add clams into the system and gradually increase the water depth. This method helps provide a consistent source of natural feed over time, supporting sustainable growth. In addition to natural sources, pupae and snails can also be farmed artificially to serve as a reliable animal protein source for the clams. However, due to their high appetite and large amount of waste, Chengyu can easily cause water pollution and eutrophication. Therefore, strict water quality management is essential. All feed should be placed on feeding trays or along the pond’s edges, rather than scattered randomly. This allows for easy removal of leftover feed, reducing water contamination. Every 10 days, replace part of the water to maintain good conditions. Additionally, apply 1.5 kg of slurry lime per 0.07 hectares monthly to help control water quality and eliminate harmful bacteria. To maintain an optimal water temperature, adjust the water level according to the season. In spring, keep the water level between 50–80 cm to help warm the water and encourage early feeding. During summer, raise the water level to cool the environment and prevent heat stress. In autumn, maintain a higher water level to slow the temperature drop, helping the clams stay warm through the winter months.
