The United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs in Prague said on the 14th that a serious food crisis is occurring in the Sahel region in Central and West Africa, and that tens of millions of people are at risk of food shortages.

Prague said that the United Nations issued a warning in September last year and said that if no action is taken, the Sahel region will likely have a serious humanitarian crisis this spring. In the coming months, Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal, Nigeria and Northern Cameroon are likely to be affected by the crisis.
She called on the international community to take early action to provide emergency food aid for the Sahel region, especially for children who are threatened by hunger. She said that the United Nations assistance program for the Sahel needs 724 million U.S. dollars in support, and it has already received a donation of 136 million U.S. dollars, which still needs the support of more countries and governments.
