It's similar to removing a layer of clothing in cold weather—your ability to withstand the cold is greatly reduced. Therefore, it's best to perform the scraping just before the buds begin to open. Another mistake is scraping too shallowly. Some growers may not scrape deeply enough, while others go too deep and too aggressively. This can damage the healthy, protective tissue of the tree, which is essential for its normal growth. The correct depth is to scratch only the outer layer, just enough to reach the old bark. This means avoiding areas where the bark is still green or disease-free, and focusing on the older, hardened parts. Additionally, some growers overlook smaller areas. It's not enough to scrape only the trunk and main branches; they should also inspect older twigs and branches for any signs of disease or lumps. Even small tumors, as small as a mung bean, can produce hundreds of millions of pathogenic colonies. After scraping the entire tree, it's crucial to double-check every part to ensure nothing is missed, aiming for complete and thorough coverage. Finally, after scraping, using traditional pesticides like Fujim arsenic coatings or sprays is no longer recommended due to their high residue and potential harm to the environment. Instead, eco-friendly alternatives such as a 5-times diluted citric acid solution, or bio-based coatings like gum tree resin and biofilms, are preferable. These products create a protective layer on the tree, preventing bacteria from entering and reducing moisture loss. Especially with products like Paul gum or biofilm coatings, a thin, protective film is formed on the tree surface, offering long-lasting protection without harmful side effects.
