New growth point in medical electronics: nerve implant equipment

A startup called NeuroPace wants to get a license to sell its first neuro implant device. The work of NeuroPace is just the epitome of the surge in the emerging market for neuro-devices.

In July of this year, NeuroPace sent a brain implant device for the treatment of epilepsy to the US Food and Drug Administration for approval. The product has been developed for ten years. NeuroPace hopes that its RNS system will be approved for use within one year.

NeuroPace Chief Medical Officer Martha Morrell said at the BioMedDevice forum: "I believe that a variety of closed-loop, open-loop brain stimulation devices will replace destructive surgery in the next decade."

The trial of epilepsy implants has enabled researchers to see the potential of this technology in the treatment of a variety of serious conditions, ranging from pain and depression to Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.

Morrell said: "This is the first time we have gone deep into the brain to observe real-time changes. We use it as a tool for disease management."

NeuroPace's RNS implant device has two self-made chips and found that abnormal brain activity in patients with epilepsy is more severe than previously predicted.

Morrell said: "There has been no previous diagnostic records for patients with epilepsy. The results show that the onset of the disease is only the tip of the iceberg. We found that these patients need up to 600 stimulations per day, 1-2 minutes each time."

The doctor can program the device to sense and respond to multiple conditions. NeuroPace maintains a database that can be used for long-term research on brainwave activity.

Morrell said that the potential of such devices is that they can release trace drugs and current stimulation to target areas on the brain. New electrode arrays and sensors extend the applicable symptoms of such devices. In addition to brain waves, researchers are also studying brain blood flow, oxygen, neurotransmitters, and even temperature changes to analyze symptoms.

Opportunities and Challenges

According to market analysis firm NeuroInsights, the market value of nerve equipment is about $7 billion, an increase of about 15% per year.

The market value of neuroimplant devices such as NeuroPace accounts for $2.3 billion, with an annual increase rate of 14%. The share of neurosurgery equipment is as high as $3.5 billion, with an annual growth rate of 17%.

Although the overall situation of venture capital investment is not good, it is not good in the field of medical insurance, but it is very strong in the field of neurological equipment. In 2009, the field of neurotechnology gained $1.58 billion in venture capital, a 9% increase from 2008. In the same period, the total investment in the life sciences sector is declining.

There are still many companies worth investing in. The startup NeoStim is working to reduce the symptoms of major depressiveness by electromagnetically stimulating targets deep inside the brain in a non-invasive way. M. Brett Schneider, chief medical officer at NeoStim, said the technology will be extended to other areas of the brain to treat Parkinson's syndrome, pain and anxiety.

Trifectas Medical is developing an implant technology to help the recovery of stroke patients. This technology uses current to stimulate multiple regions of the brain, helping neurons and hormones to grow and reduce inflammation.
