Piglet edema disease is an acute, subacute and sporadic infectious disease caused by pathogenic E. coli with a low cure rate. In recent years, the edema disease of piglets in our county has been increasing year by year, showing an upward trend, short course of disease, and rapid death. It has become a major obstacle to the current development of the pig industry. The author's clinical practice experience is summarized as follows.
1 Incidence and clinical symptoms
1.1 Incidence The disease occurs in pre-weaned piglets, with 15-30 kg of weaned piglets susceptible to infection, and 30-50 kg of shelf-pigs. The incidence of piglets is mostly 20 to 90 days, of which the majority are 5 to 10 days after weaning. After weaning piglets due to the addition of more fine material, or feed and feeding methods suddenly changed, the feed was too single and induced the disease, if found late or improper treatment, the mortality rate of up to 100%.
1.2 sudden onset of clinical symptoms, mental depression, limb weakness, ataxia, erratic gait swings, sometimes for circulatory motion, muscle tremors, limbs for swimming stroke; hoarseness, eyelid edema, sensitive to light and touch; Reduced excrement, some diarrhea, and even fecal blood; most of the sick pigs body temperature is not high, individual body temperature rose to 40 ~ 40.5 °C; several sudden onset of several hours or 1 to 2 days after the death.
2 pathological anatomy
Eyelids, head, neck, chest and abdomen edema, open edema with clear liquid flow; pulmonary edema, pericardial, peritoneal effusion, effusion quickly coagulated or jelly-like; small intestine, mesentery, gastric edema, lymph nodes Edema, congestion and hemorrhage; meningeal congestion, brain edema, bleeding.
3 Diagnosis
According to piglet clinical symptoms (sudden onset of weaning, red eye conjunctiva, eyelid edema, typical neurological symptoms, hind limb paralysis), combined with dissection of extensive edema of various tissues and organs, it can be initially diagnosed as edematous disease in piglets.
4 Control measures
4.1 Prevention and prevention The disease should strengthen the feeding and management of weaned piglets, prevent sudden changes in feed and feeding methods, avoid feeds that are too single, feed more green and green feed, and add vitamins and minerals. Antibiotics such as oxytetracycline can also be added to feed to prevent this disease. In addition, swine edema disease antitoxin can be used for emergency prevention and treatment. Sows should be injected with E. coli K88-K99-987P trivalent genetically engineered seedlings at 40 and 15 days before birth. Newborn suckling pigs can be intramuscularly injected 2ml/head 2 to 3 days old, and sodium selenite 2ml/head at the age of 15 days. These measures can greatly reduce the incidence of the disease.
4.2 Drug treatment (1) Anti-toxic and edema fluid injection 0.2ml/kg body weight produced by Sichuan Essence Animal Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Intramuscular injection once a day for 3 days. (2) Enrofloxacin 2.5 ~ 5mg/kg body weight, oral administration, 2 times a day for 3 to 5 days. (3) Streptomycin 10 ~ 20mg/kg body weight, intramuscular injection, 2 times a day for 3 days. (4) At the beginning of the disease, vitamins and sodium selenite can be added for treatment. Severe edema can use hydrochlorothiazide 5ml/intramuscular injection or furosemide 10ml/intramuscular injection. More serious use of 25% glucose 5ml/kg, sodium plus 0.5g, Vc 0.1 ~ 0.2ml/kg, dexamethasone 5mg, 20% mannitol 50 ~ 100ml, intravenous drip.
5 typical cases
The town of Gongshi, Jiashi Township of the county had 11 piglets in May 2003, and the disease occurred about 8 days after weaning. After two days of treatment by local folk veterinarians, 2 died and 3 had hair problems. The livestock owners came to the station to seek treatment. . Inspection: Pigs have swollen eyelids and do not eat. They sway and turn around during walking. The body temperature is normal in 6 heads. The body temperature in 3 heads is between 40 and 40.5°C. According to the clinical symptoms analysis diagnosed as piglet edema disease. Prescription: (1) antiviral edema injection 3.5m1 intramuscular injection, once daily. After two days of treatment, all of them stood up, their spirits improved, their appetite was improved, their condition improved, and they recovered after two consecutive days.
6 Summary
(1) Strengthen the feeding and management of weaned piglets, prevent sudden changes in feed and feeding methods, in particular, limit the feeding of high-protein, high-carbohydrate feeds, avoid feeds that are too single, and properly take oxytetracycline or norfloxacin after weaning. Reducing or eliminating stress factors and strengthening immunization are especially important for preventing this disease. (2) early detection and early treatment.
