Japanese research team found that natto has anticancer effect

On April 1, according to Japanese media reports, the research team of Prof. Ito, from the Graduate School of Science and Engineering of Akita, Japan, found that the ingredients contained in natto have anticancer effects. The polypeptide component having an antibacterial action is extracted from the ground natto, and when the antimicrobial peptide is administered to human and mouse-derived cancer cells, the cancer cell will die within 24 hours.

A specific method for extracting the natto-derived antimicrobial peptide is to pulverize the natto and separate it by a centrifugal separator, and then extract a component having a molecular weight of 5000 by a physicochemical method, and the component is an antimicrobial polypeptide. The antibacterial polypeptide is positively charged and the cell membrane is negatively charged. Therefore, the antibacterial polypeptide binds to the cell membrane and then opens a hole in the cell membrane, causing the cell content to flow out and causing the cell to die. Cancer cells have more negatively charged molecules than normal cells and are more easily detected, so it is speculated that the natto-derived antimicrobial peptide is more likely to destroy cancer cells.

The antibacterial polypeptide can also be extracted from natto which is to be disposed of due to expiration. If the extraction method of discarded natto as a raw material is applied to the actual, the production cost can be saved.

Moreover, it has been found through research that the antibacterial polypeptide has an effect on herpesvirus, pneumococcal, and the like in addition to cancer cells. In the future, the Department of Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine of Akita University will conduct animal experiments and safety assessments. Professor Ito said that although the ultimate goal is to develop anticancer agents, because of its high difficulty, it is first planned to develop antibacterial sprays or masks.
