Swedish researchers have found that children born to middle-aged and older men are more likely to develop bipolar psychological disorders when they grow up, and are more likely to become depressed and arrogant. The study was published in the September issue of the Public Psychiatry Archives. Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden analyzed Swedish national demographic figures, including 13,428 people born in 1932-1991 who had bipolar disorder. They found that fathers who were over 40 years old when they were born had a higher chance of developing bipolar disorder after they grew up, and children born to fathers 55 and older were the most likely to get the disease. Compared with children born in their 20s, children born to middle-aged and older people are 37% more likely to suffer from bipolar disorder.
